College hot seat: 10 coaches who could be hitting unemployment line
8. Gus Malzahn – Auburn
Gus Malzahn could be a bit of a different situation here. The Auburn Tigers have been rock solid this season at 8-3.
Despite the fact that Malzahn seems to find himself on these lists a lot in recent years, he’s had one of the best defensive fronts in the nation this season and the Tigers have been a competitive bunch in the SEC West.
If Malzahn were to depart Auburn at the end of the season, it could be more likely that he chooses to leave on his volition. Sometimes a parting of ways could do well for a program and a coach at the right time.
With openings at Florida State and Arkansas, Malzahn could decide a change of scenery might be the right move. Then again, a blowout loss to Alabama could also quickly change the dialogue in a different direction.
It feels like the Malzahn song and dance is to a different tune each season, but he should be commended for the job he has done so far this season. In the event Malzahn was to be let go, he would very likely land on his feet somewhere else right away.
