2. Don Brown, Michigan Defensive Coordinator

Brown is nearing the completion of his fifth season as defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. But he came from Addazio’s staff, having served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2013-2015., including leading the country’s No. 1 defense (by yardage allowed) in 2015.

Brown was born in Massachusetts, with coaching ties there as well. He was the defensive coordinator (1998-1999) and then head coach (2004-2008) at UMass, with time as head coach at Northeastern (2000-2003) in between. He is a deeply Eastern-rooted coach, with stints as defensive coordinator at Maryland and Connecticut too.

Brown has not been a head coach since his run at UMass ended in 2008, instead of finding his place as a solid defensive coordinator. Maybe at 64 years old, the head coaching ship has sailed, never to return.

Boston College can have a wide range of options to replace Addazio if they want to pursue them. Whether some of those pursuits would be fruitful is another matter, and Brown may really want the job if it’s offered. He’s also got the defensive background to get that side of the ball back on track quickly for the Eagles, which has to be a priority in the coaching search.
