After rumors over where he’d play next since leaving MLS, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is headed back to Europe to play for AC Milan again.

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic announced he would be leaving the MLS in November, speculation over where he would play next naturally followed. According to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports in Italy, the charismatic veteran striker is headed back to Europe to play for AC Milan in Serie A.

Ibrahimovic is reportedly going to sign a sixth-month contract for the remainder of the season, through June 2020, with a renewal option for another year. The move is expected to be finalized in the coming days.

Ibrahimovic arrived stateside in 2018 accompanied by much fanfare, and over two seasons with the LA Galaxy in MLS he delivered pretty much as expected on and off the field. Over 58 matches for the Galaxy, the 38-year old had 53 goals and 18 assists.

Ibrahimovic last played in Europe on Boxing Day 2017. Over 46 matches for Manchester United, his last European club, he had 28 goals and 10 assists.

The move to Milan will be a return for Ibrahimovic, who will be heading back for his second stint on the pitch for AC Milan. From 2010-2012, he had 56 goals in 85 games for the team.

While there have been questions about what role he could play for a top-flight European side at this point, Zlatan should immediately help a currently lagging Milan squad. Milan recently dropped to 11th place in Serie A and have scored just 16 goals in 17 league matches thus far. Apart from his still prolific talent, his presence will surely provide a boost within the club and around it.

Ibrahimovic is a serial winner who has always been in search of the next challenge, but moving back to a struggling AC Milan makes sense for the twilight of Zlatan’s career. He gets to return to a place he has already succeeded, to a club that needs him, where he doesn’t necessarily have to win a trophy but can prove that he still has what it takes to play in one of Europe’s top leagues.
