2020 NFL Mock Draft: Full first round with playoffs looming
By Brad Weiss
The Miami Dolphins wrapped up their 2019 regular season with an incredible road victory, beating the New England Patriots inside Gillette Stadium in Week 17. The win was even more impressive considering the Patriots were playing for a first round bye in the AFC Playoffs, and the Dolphins were seemingly over-matched on both sides of the ball.
Overall, the Dolphins record does not look great, but if you really pull back the onion, they have a solid season considering everything they had to go through. The front office was selling off their best players for draft picks, but somehow, new head coach Brian Flores got this team to win games, which says a lot about his skill as a head coach moving forward.
Looking ahead, the Dolphins need to bring in a franchise quarterback, as they finished the season with Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter. While Fitzpatrick has his moments, a guy like Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa would be an excellent long-term play, and coming off a terrible injury, he could even sit behind Fitzpatrick until he is ready to take over.
In what was likely the final game as the starting quarterback for Philip Rivers as a member of the Chargers franchise, the Bolts lost a road game to the Kansas City Chiefs. Rivers was overwhelmed with emotion after the game, and while he may not be done at the NFL level, it is clear it is time for the Chargers to move in a new direction.
Looking at this 2020 NFL Draft class, there are a handful of quarterbacks who should go in the top-10 picks. One of those guys would be Justin Herbert from Oregon, who could have been a first round pick last year, but instead decide to return to school for a fourth season as the starter, and will come into the league NFL ready.
In a weird turn of fate, the best quarterback in team history, Hall of Famer Dan Fouts, also played at Oregon, making this pick even more intriguing. The Rivers Era may not have resulted in a Super Bowl, but he is likely headed to the Hall of Fame as well, and with that said, it is time for the Chargers to turn the page.
