Scouting Report. G. player. Pick Analysis. Washington Redskins. Brandon Scherff. 4. 58

Could you even imagine? What if the Colts had Quenton Nelson and Brandon Scherff occupying the two guard spots along the offensive line? That would make for one of the most formidable offensive lines in the NFL. Running back Marlon Mack would have a field day running behind those two. It’ll be a tad pricey, but the Colts have the cash to pry Scherff away from the nation’s capital.

Scherff was a former first-round pick out of Iowa by the Washington Redskins back in 2015. So he will be hitting unrestricted free agency for the first time after playing out his fifth-year option. Washington is about middle-of-the-pack in terms of available cap space as a projected $46 million. The Redskins could bring him back, but they have a lot of holes to fill elsewhere.

Admittedly, Scherff is one of the best guards in the NFL. However, that doesn’t mean the Redskins should use the franchise tag on him for 2020. Doing so would cost Washington $14.9 million. Keep in mind that the offensive lineman franchise tag is largely used to keep franchise left tackles in place and not necessarily interior linemen, even if it is a player of Scherff’s caliber.

With only the Miami Dolphins having more available cap space than the Colts, Indianapolis can seemingly beat out anybody in a bidding war. Paying a premium to get a premium talent at a luxury position seems over the top, but from the football fan in all of us, who wouldn’t want to see an offensive interior with Scherff and Nelson road-grading people in their primes?
