Fantasy baseball 2020 tiered catcher rankings
By Bill Pivetz
To prepare for the upcoming fantasy baseball season, I will be doing tiered position rankings. First up are the catchers.
Football is over. That means it’s time to prepare for the upcoming fantasy baseball season. It’s been too long since I’ve written, talked and watched baseball. Pitchers and catchers report in about a week. Opening Day is March 26, sooner than I can remember it being. We are close.
So, as fantasy baseball owners prepare for their drafts, I will be making eight different rankings posts for each position (SP, RP, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF and DH). The first seven will have tiered breakdowns while DH will be a straightforward ranking. First up is the catcher position.
For fantasy baseball, unlike other positions, most leagues have just one spot for a catcher. While there will be just one starting first baseman, etc., you can have one as your corner infielder or utility, most owners will have just one catcher and that’s it. The statistical dropoff is too great among catchers compared to other positions.
That’s why this list will only feature the top-20 catchers. Regardless of the league size, having just one catcher on your team is enough. If anything happens to him, you can find a short-term replacement on the waiver wire.
To determine the rankings, I will take into account the player’s skill and the team constructed around them. You can be the best player in the world but there’s only so much you can do with no one helping you out.
I broke the top-20 catchers into four tiers, so let’s get started with the rankings.
