Arizona Cardinals free agency 2020: Top 5 targets
By Nick Villano
Greg Van Roten
Not many fans are going to get excited about signing a guard, let alone one who suffered a season-ending injury last season. However, Greg Van Roten was really decent before a toe injury ended things in Week 12. Despite the injury, Pro Football Focus named him the most improved player on the Panthers, ranking him 15th among qualified left guards.
Justin Pugh is currently in the Cardinals’ left guard spot, but things can be moved around to give Van Roten a shot. He was awful in 2018, but made major steps in his second season on the offensive line. Honestly, the O-line completely went to hell after he went down.
The Cardinals’ interior line is where they will need the most help. We told you that before they re-signed D.J. Humphries, and we still expect them to use the eighth-overall pick on an offensive tackle. This signing could really solidify a line that needs to protect Kyler Murray.
Van Roten is one of many take-a-chance signings at left guard. However, he seems to be the one that played the best last season. We expect a toe injury to fully recover without lingering effects, even for the big guys up front. This could be a signing that stays under the radar for a price everyone is happy with.
