4 teams who could sign former Falcons RB Devonta Freeman
1. Detroit Lions
At last year’s trade deadline, as they pursued avenues to replace an injured Kerryon Johnson, the Lions were talking to the Falcons about Freeman before they decided they didn’t want to trade him. Now that he’s freely available, without the burden of what remained of his contract, Detroit circling back with some interest seems likely.
Detroit finished 21st in the league in rush offense last year, which considering they were without Johnson for half the season wasn’t all that bad. But it’s going to be hard to count on Johnson staying healthy for a full 16 games, and the Lions need a better contingency plan as head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn have their jobs on the line this year.
Johnson will be the lead back for the Lions as long as he’s healthy. But Freeman could be quite effective in a reduced role, and thus reduce the punishment Johnson would take too.
