3. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have made a commitment to Austin Ekeler, while willing letting Melvin Gordon go in free agency. After falling short in their pursuit of Tom Brady, due to circumstances they could not control, they seem resigned to having Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback this year as a likely bridge to who they’ll draft in April.

The Chargers have made moves to upgrade their offensive line, with guard Trai Turner coming in via a trade and offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga signed in free agency. They have the pieces of a very good offense, but there can be questions about Ekeler holding up as a proverbial workhorse.

Ekeler had eight receiving touchdowns last year, but he has just eight rushing touchdowns over three NFL seasons. Even at his worst last season, Gurley was heavily involved in the red zone (56 carries) and converted touchdowns at close to his rates from 2017 and 2018.

Gordon is leaving behind four straight seasons with at least eight rushing touchdowns. So that’s a void the Chargers need to fill, and they have enough cap space ($27.88 million) to take on some money. Gurley would fill that void as a primary goal line guy for a productive offense, and he wouldn’t even have to move.
