Second Round

CB. Utes . Jaylon Johnson. 45. player. 843.

Tampa Bay had the 30th ranked pass defense in the NFL last year (270.1 yards per game), and they also came in near the bottom of the league in interceptions with 12. So some reinforcements in the secondary are needed.

Johnson has the size (6-foot, 193 pounds), length (31 3/8″ arms) and athleticism to profile as a No. 1 corner, with the skill set to play in man and zone effectively. He led the Utes with 11 pass breakups last year, along with two interceptions and 36 total tackles on his way to earning first team All-Pac-12 and second-team AP All-American honors. He ran a 4.5 40 at the NFL Combine, so speed is also an asset.

Johnson was a first-round pick in some earlier mock drafts, but surgery on March 4 to fix a torn labrum in his shoulder that he played through last season stands to be an issue. Teams won’t be able to have their own doctors check him out before the draft. Even though Johnson should be ready to go in plenty of time for Week 1, the doubt may lead him to falling further than  he otherwise might or should.

But a fall for Johnson is also an opportunity for someone to get a draft steal. The Buccaneers should be the team to take advantage.
