5 NFL teams who could trade for Curtis Samuel
4. Green Bay Packers
Davante Adams missed four games last year, but he still led the Packers in catches (83), targets (127) and receiving yards (997) by a good margin. The next most productive wide receiver on the team was Allen Lazard (35 receptions for 477 yards and three touchdowns).
The Packers have signed Devin Funchess to theoretically step in as the No. 2 wide receiver. They are sure to draft a wide receiver though, perhaps as early as the first round with the 30th overall pick. Even with that, adding an extra weapon for Aaron Rodgers has to be on the radar.
Samuel doesn’t have to be a 100-target guy to make an impact. There’s a solid argument he’d be better in a more limited role, based on diminished effectiveness in some areas last year.
Samuel showed he can be a deep threat in 2019, ranking third in average depth of target among 38 players with more than 100 targets (14.3). Kyle Allen ranked in the bottom-five in accuracy on 20-plus yard throws (according to Pro Football Focus), so even a diminished version of Rodgers is an upgrade in that area.
Samuel has also shown a nose for the end zone, with 11 receiving touchdowns over the last two seasons and nine of those scores on 24 combined red zone targets.
The Packers may not want to relinquish a draft pick to get Samuel. But they are in a short window to win as Rodgers’ career winds down, and all avenues to add pieces to the offense have to be explored.
