Under now former general manager John Dorsey, the Browns invested their share of free-agent money and draft choices into fixing the team’s defensive backfield. In 2018, Cleveland used the fourth overall pick in the draft on Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward. During free agency, the club traded for safety Damarious Randall (Green Bau Packers) and signed corners Terrance Mitchell, T.J. Carrie and E.J. Gaines. Of that group, only Ward and Mitchell remain with the club.

Last offseason, free agency brought safeties S Eric Murray and Morgan Burnett – both no longer with the franchise – and the club used three of its seven selections on help for the secondary. The Browns’ top pick was LSU cornerback Greedy Williams, a second-round choice. He played and started 12 games, finishing with 47 tackles and two passes defensed. The 6’2”, 185-pound performer did not intercept a pass and given his numbers, it’s easy to understand his extremely low ranking (92nd) by Pro Football Focus (subscription required).

But it’s also worth a mention that the Browns’ new defensive coordinator is well-traveled Joe Woods, who did wonders with the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive backs this past season. All told, Williams could make a major jump this fall.
