Green Bay Packers: 5 offseason needs in 2020
By Matt Graves
4. Backup Quarterback
Aaron Rodgers has been the face of the Packers for quite some time. This would be a perfect opportunity for Green Bay to draft a quarterback — not one to replace Rodgers immediately, but a quarterback who can sit and learn before taking over.
In a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Packers had a pre-draft meeting arranged with Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts.
A quarterback like Jalen Hurts is ideal. The former Oklahoma quarterback has an intriguing skill-set and could use some seasoning. Drafting a player like Hurts would beneficial for him, since learning from a quarterback like Rodgers would make for an ideal landing spot.
Hurts isn’t expected to be a top-tier quarterback taken at a high pick. However, his dual-threat ability makes him an interesting prospect to watch. With 56 career college games under his belt, Hurts finished with a completion of 65 percent. Plus, he threw for almost 9,500 passing yards and 80 touchdowns.
The Packers have done a ton of research on quarterbacks in the upcoming draft. They don’t have a long-term developmental quarterback, and drafting Hurts or another player at that position wouldn’t hurt to gamble on.
