2nd round

I expect Chicago to “Weekend at Bernie’s” Trubisky with this draft class and it starts with getting a reliable target at wide receiver in the second round.

Baylor’s Denzel Mims has enjoyed a steady ascent up draft boards in the last few months, with some expecting him to go as high the back half of the first round. Nonetheless, the sheer chaos of where receivers go in this draft leaves the Bears with Mims near the top of the second.

Mims is one of my favorite players in the class whose athleticism jumped out at me the minute on tape. I was most impressed with his fluid hips and change of direction, which certainly showed up in his remarkable 6.66-second three-cone time.

He has the length to provide Trubisky a big target on the outside and should be an impact player from day one. The Baylor Bear becomes a Chicago Bear.

The Bears have been all over tight ends during the pre-draft process and I don’t think that stops even with the addition of former Packer Jimmy Graham.

Purdue’s Brycen Hopkins won’t offer much as an in-line blocker but displays plenty of athleticism and upside as a receiver. Taking him at this spot would be too rich for my liking, personally, but Chicago is in a tough position with not having picks in rounds three and four.

The Bears could very well seek to trade down from this spot, but still target Hopkins or Dayton’s Adam Trautman later on. LSU offensive lineman Damien Lewis is another name to watch here in addition to the tight ends.
