4. Marlon Davidson will start at defensive end

The Falcons believe signing Fowler will be an upgrade over Beasley at one defensive end spot, but they still have big issues on the other side. Neither Tak McKinley nor Allen Robinson is going to be worthy of a starting spot for this defense.

That’s why Davidson is going to get his chance to begin his NFL career on the outside. Most scouts expect him to move inside to defensive tackle, but he’s got some interesting pass rush ability from the edge. He should kick inside on obvious passing downs, but he’s a solid bet to start at defensive end on more conventional downs.

That obviously isn’t an ideal scenario for the Falcons. In particular, they’d prefer to see McKinley finally realize his potential. That’s more of a wish than a plan at this point in his career. He may not even be on the roster when the regular season begins.

Bailey only managed to produce one sack in 15 games last year as a reserve. Davidson simply has the most upside of any of the options available to Quinn and his coaching staff. Look for the former Auburn star to spend his rookie season on the outside before the Falcons can afford to move him to tackle.
