3. Logan Ryan – New York Jets

It appeared that the “Jets believe that they will sign former Patriots and Titans defensive back, Logan Ryan.” That was a tweet from Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News back on May 12.

There clearly seems to be interest between the Jets and one of the top free agents. As there should be. Ryan is coming off one of his best seasons with the Titans, accumulating 113 tackles, 4.5 sacks and four interceptions. Ryan was a leader of the Titans secondary that helped elevate a defense into the AFC Championship Game.

Ryan makes a lot of sense for the Jets to explore. From a personal standpoint, Ryan is a New Jersey native who played college ball at Rutgers. He is familiar with the division, having spent four seasons with New England, appearing in two Super Bowls. He’s also a player who’s skill set as a disruptive player in the secondary, fitting coordinator Gregg Williams’ style.

For the Jets, they did a lot to improve their secondary this offseason. Bringing in names like Pierre Desir from free agency as well as Ashytn Davis and Bryce Hall in the draft. Desir is on a prove-it deal and Davis and Hall could need some time to develop into every-down players. The Jets incumbent starters are Arthur Maulet and Blessaun Austin who are still a work in progress.

A player of Ryan’s character could do well for a very young and inexperienced corner back room on a one-year deal. It also gives Ryan a year with Williams to hit the open market again for big dollars in 2021.
