Bundesliga player Serie A clubs should target No. 5: Lucas Hernandez

What a difference a year makes. While it would have appeared nearly impossible just a few months ago that Bayern Munich would ever part with the French international, the development of the past few months has put Lucas Hernandez on the selling block.

The 24-year-old center back would be a perfect addition to the defense-minded Italian too flight, but has struggled throughout most of this season. Last summer, the Bavarian giants paid $90 million to Atletico Madrid for him. In return, the defender has struggled with injuries all season (he has only 12 league appearances) and despite returning to fitness has failed to break into the starting lineup.

“Lucas had a difficult time,” coach Hansi-Dieter Flick told reporters. “First, he was injured, then he played, but because of the many games collected another injury.”

It also seems unlikely Hernandez, who helped France win the World Cup in 2018, will break into the starting lineup given how well both David Alaba and Jerome Boateng have been playing in the back since the season returned from hiatus.

Teams like Napoli and Roma could certainly use a strong defender to shore up their backlines ahead of next season.
