DraftKings PGA: 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge Picks and Analysis

It has been a difficult stretch between now and the last PGA Tour golf tournament. The PGA tour postponed the first round of The Players Championship in March and we have yet to see PGA tour golf since. This been a trying time for the world, with COVID 19 taking a toll on so many people through the USA and the world. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the frontline workers and the families that suffered through these trying times. That being said, there are plenty of people that have been circling this date on their calendar, as real golf finally makes its return. Colonial Country Club via the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge is where we will commence our stay at home orders.

The PGA Tour travels to Fort Worth Texas this week, playing without fans in the gallery. Colonial Country Club has a rich tradition with this tournament (although the name Charles Schwab Challenge in only one it’s second year), so we do not have a shortage of course history. Its not long, playing 7,209 yards, but always plays pretty difficult.  The course has ranked in the top half in difficulty each of the past 2 years, despite being one of the shorter courses on the circuit. 12 par 4’s (par 70) make the course a little less score-able than a typical par 72 track, and big numbers are always lurking. Especially if the wind picks up, the course can be a nightmare. And we are in Texas, so the wind is typically a Charles Schwab Challenge.

The big gift we have this week is the strength of the field. It is absolutely stacked. We have the top 5 golfers in the world teeing it up this week, and two more in the top 10. The past 5 champs will also be teeing it up this week: 2019 Kevin Na, 2018 Justin Rose, 2017 Kevin Kisner, 2016 Jordan Speith, and 2015 Chris Kirk. In 2019, we saw Kevin Na get scorching hot with the flat stick to post a 13 under, holding off Tony Finau (9 under) and taking home the hardware.

Ball-striking is going to be the most important stat to look at this week for the 2020 Charles Schwab Invitational. Crisp irons on approach and when clubbing down off-the-tee are pertinent on this course. The rough is not a major penalty because clean contact it paramount when playing in the wind. Bombers always have an advantage, but short knockers have a lot of success at Colonial. My favorite stat this week is par 4 scoring.

Key Stats
