2. The Pittsburgh Steelers could go from Ben Roethlisberger to Colin Kaepernick

The Steelers have long been one of the NFL’s most forward-thinking organizations. Longtime owner Dan Rooney has been an advocate for advancing minorities into the coaching ranks, coming up with the “Rooney Rule” requiring all teams to interview at least one person of color for a coaching or front office vacancy.

Signing Colin Kaepernick would be a proud boost to Rooney’s legacy, showing that Pittsburgh remains committed to supporting minorities in football. The move also makes tremendous football since Ben Roethlisberger is 38 years old and coming off a serious elbow injury.

That issue caused Roethlisberger to miss most of the 2019 season, leading the Steelers to miss the postseason despite an incredible defense. The uninspiring combo of Mason Rudolph and Delvin “Duck” Hodges filled in for Roethlisberger, making it stunning that Pittsburgh hasn’t upgraded its backup quarterback.

Signing Kaepernick would give the Steelers much more peace of mind at the game’s most important position as well as a potential starter if Roethlisberger retires in the next few years. Kaepernick would be set up well too with a strong coaching staff and skill-position talent.
