For all of Atletico Madrid’s ups and downs in La Liga this year, their last match before the sport went on hiatus was a thrilling Champions League triumph over reigning champions Liverpool.
The hosts Athletic Club sit in 10th place in La Liga on 37 points. The highlight of their season thus far had been reaching the final of the Copa del Rey, though it’s now unclear when that will take place. San Mames has been a stronghold for Athletic Club, going 7-3-3 at home, conceding just seven goals, and only 2-7-5 on the road.
Atleti on the other hand are 3-7-3 on the road compared to 8-5-1 at home.
Atleti beat Athletic, 2-0, in their previous meeting this season.
