WWE confirms Edge underwent surgery after suffering an injury at Backlash

WWE has confirmed that Edge suffered a torn triceps during his match-up with Randy Orton, billed as “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever,” that served as the WWE Backlash 2020 main event.

Wrestling Inc. reports that Edge suffered the injury during re-takes of the bout. With the match being taped a week prior to Backlash, WWE noted that “The Rated R Superstar” is already rehabbing the injury at home.

“WWE Digital has confirmed that Edge suffered a torn triceps as a result of injuries sustained during The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever,” WWE announced in a statement. “Edge has undergone successful surgery and is currently rehabbing at home.”

Depending on the medical source and severity of the injury, a torn triceps could leave Edge out of action anywhere between four and eight months, almost assuring he’ll miss the rest of the 2020 WWE calendar year.

According to wrestlenews.co, Edge and Orton were scheduled to end their feud in a blow-off match at Summerslam in August. Obviously, those plans will now have to change as a result of the injury.

Wrestling Inc. also adds that WWE is promoting that Orton may have also been injured during the bout but is scheduled to open the June 15 edition of Raw and address the match.

While many consider the bout to have not lived up to its “Greatest Wrestling Match” billing, the near 45-minute bout was widely praised from its tribute to Howard Finkel, to the intense drama and the callbacks to their old foes and feuds.

The contest gave a treat of an ending to what was otherwise widely considered a dull, lackluster and disappointing Backlash, which also saw every champion retain their title.

Edge, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2012, made his in-ring return at the Royal Rumble in January and defeated Randy Orton in a last man standing match at WrestleMania 36 in April.
