5 reasons Giants can win with Daniel Jones in 2020
4. Breakable habits
The NFL is obviously challenging and adjusting to the highest level of football takes time. The acclimation process varies depending on the individual.
For instance, based off the last slide, some rookies might not be mentally prepared yet, whereas others need to iron out their skill-set. Jones falls into the latter category, which means he has conquered perhaps the most difficult adjustment players face when they turn pro.
Last year, Jones fumbled the ball 18 times and the threw 12 interceptions. Now, the picks are not necessarily the issue here. It is the fumbling habit that Jones needs to break, and this is a somewhat fixable issue.
Yes, an improved offensive line plays a large part in this fumbling tendency that Jones has. He was hit 66 times and sacked 38 times in 13 games last year. With cleaner pockets that reduce the pressure Jones faced last season, the second-year gunslinger can secure the ball more efficiently.
At the same time, Jones needs to enhance his sense for pressure and get rid of the ball. This will avoid negative sack plays, as well as pacify some of those fumble misfortunes.
In an odd sense, Jones impressed many because he still played strong with a ton of negative plays last year. But, as seen in the team’s record, you cannot consistently play that way and expect to win.
Turning the ball over that frequently is unsustainable. However, with an upgraded line, more reps and experience, Jones can absolutely work the fumbling out of his game and continue to develop.
Obviously there’s a chance that Jones cannot extinguish the frequency in which he fumbles. For now, it is a work in progress.
