It appears unlikely the Steelers will be ready to move on from Ben Roethlisberger in the near future.

Roethlisberger’s contract runs through 2021 and, though the Steelers would rid themselves of his $41.25 million cap hit by letting him go next offseason, they would have to pay over $22 million in dead cap to do so, according to Spotrac.

However, keeping Roethlisberger for the final year of his contract would not prohibit the Steelers from selecting Lance if they have another down year by their lofty standards.

Should Roethlisberger underperform or endure another injury-hit season, it would be prudent for the Steelers to find a long-term successor at quarterback, something that is not present on their current roster.

Lance has a skill set not dissimilar to Roethlisberger. He is more mobile than Roethlisberger has been at any point in his career, though his arm is not of the same standard as that of the Steelers veteran.

Were he to be selected by the Steelers, Lance would be landing in a situation set up for him to suceed with the talent Pittsburgh has on both sides of the ball and the franchise’s history of organizational stability.

Lance has the attributes to displace a declining Roethlisberger in 2021 and could unquestionably hit the ground running with a team that stayed competitive with Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges last season.
