Baker Mayfield sent a passionate letter to the Oklahoma governor trying to save a man’s life

Ever since the disheartening death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, we’ve seen countless celebrities and professional athletes step up to try and help things change when it comes to racial injustices across the United States.

Now, you can add Cleveland Browns quarterback and former Oklahoma Sooners standout Baker Mayfield to the list.

Currently in Oklahoma, a man by the name of Julius Jones is on death row for a murder he allegedly committed 18 years ago. Jones has sworn his innocence ever since, and is eligible for execution as early as this fall. That’s why Mayfield and so many others are doing everything they can to make sure that doesn’t happen.

The former Sooner sent a passionate and emotional letter to Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt, pleading with him to help Jones out. Jones allegedly killed Paul Howell in 1999. The only eyewitness, Howell’s sister, described the suspect as a black male wearing a white shirt and a red bandana covering his face. Jones was picked up soon after and has been behind bars ever since.

Mayfield, and others like Blake Griffin and Russell Westbrook, have brought up how such little evidence used to arrest Jones was simply insane. Even worse, it could see Jones executed if something doesn’t change.

Fortunately for Jones, he has tons of backing right now. Folks across the country are hoping justice is served and he can be removed from death row as soon as possible.

Mayfield’s latest letter to Stitt was extremely passionate. Will it be enough, combined with the other efforts being made, to save Jones? We can only hope.
