Despite speculation, Washington did not cut bait on Dwayne Haskins after his rookie season, which would have been grossly unfair given the tumult that surrounded his first year in the league and has for too long been a defining feature of NFL campaigns for the Redskins.

Haskins, when he did start in 2019, was not put in a position to succeed. Following the hiring of Ron Rivera, the former Ohio State passer should have a significantly better support system around him. The defense was boosted by the addition of Chase Young while the draft also saw the Redskins put more young playmakers around Haskins with the selections of Antonio Gibson and Antonio Gandy-Golden.

The 15th-overall pick in 2019, Haskins would have to make almost no progress for the Redskins to be justified in looking elsewhere. It would be more beneficial for them to look to improve his support system further by adding an elite left tackle who can fill the void left by Trent Williams’ trade to the San Francisco 49ers.

Washington selected Saahdiq Charles in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. He should get a chance to start as a rookie but that does not prohibit the Redskins from drafting Sewell, who many believe would have been the best player in this year’s class.

He has a strong case for being considered the top prospect in 2021 and by selecting him, the Redskins would be giving Haskins no excuse for year three.
