What’s next for Colin Kaepernick after the Patriots signed Cam Newton?

The quarterback dominoes continue to fall this offseason after the New England Patriots signed Cam Newton to a one-year deal on Sunday night. With Newton now headed to the AFC East, all the big quarterback targets are officially off the board. Well, almost all of them.

The big name that remains out there is quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who hasn’t seen the field in an NFL game since 2016. With teams showing him interest, though, how does Newton’s signing with the Pats affect Kaepernick’s status moving forward?

Could the Philadelphia Eagles sign Colin Kaepernick?

Newton’s deal with the Pats, with incentives, can max out at around $7.5 million. Since Kaepernick hasn’t played in so long, there’s just no way he’s going to come close to that kind of money. However, for interested parties, a one-year deal to get him on board makes the most sense.

The Philadelphia Eagles have been mentioned as a team for Kaepernick in recent weeks. While the former 49ers quarterback won’t be stealing Carson Wentz’s job, he could push for the No. 2 job over Nate Sudfeld. Think about it, should the injury-prone Wentz go down, would you rather have Kaepernick or Sudfeld taking over the reigns of the offense?

Kaepernick won’t be an expensive signing. If a team were to go out and get him on a one-year deal, it would be a low-risk type of move. We just have to wait and see if anyone decides to give him his long-awaited second shot in the league.
