AFC North

Baltimore Ravens: QB Elvis Grbac

After winning the Super Bowl in 2000, Baltimore looked to upgrade at quarterback by replacing Trent Dilfer with Grbac.

The logic was sound at the time since Grbac was coming off a Pro Bowl appearance in Kansas City, earning a five-year deal in Baltimore. Grbac flopped in his one season and was cut after 2001 when he refused to renegotiate his deal.

Cincinnati Bengals: WR Laveranues Coles

The Bengals don’t often spend in free agency, making their decision to sign Coles to a four-year, $28 million deal noteworthy.

Coles was expected to replace T.J. Houshmandzadeh but failed to produce, recording just 43 catches for 514 yards and five touchdowns in 2009. The Bengals cut Coles after the year and he never played another NFL game.

Cleveland Browns: C LeCharles Bentley

Sometimes bad contracts are the result of poor injury luck and that was the case with Bentley. The Browns thought they had scored the best free agent in football when they signed Bentley to a six-year deal to anchor their offensive line but he tore his patella tendon on the first play of training camp.

A series of injuries devastated Bentley’s leg and he was released in 2008 without ever playing a game for the Browns.

Pittsburgh Steelers: TE LaDarius Green

The Steelers are a team that usually makes wise free-agent investments so Green was a rare miss. Green showed flashes of promise backing up Antonio Gates in San Diego so Pittsburgh gave him a four-year deal to replace the retiring Heath Miller.

The fit didn’t work as Green was bothered by injuries, leading the Steelers to cut him after just one year.
