Who are the worst free-agent signings in the history of each NFL team?

NFL free agency really is a double-edged sword. Some teams can use the free agency period to quickly improve while others have gone on to become big losers. NFL history is littered with massive free agent busts, so let’s take a look at the worst signing for each of the league’s 32 teams. We’ll start in the AFC East.

AFC East

Buffalo Bills: G Derrick Dockery

Looking to bolster their offensive line, Buffalo signed Dockery to a seven-year deal worth $49 million. Dockery lasted just two seasons with the Bills before being released due to salary cap considerations. It was a massive waste of money in retrospect.

Miami Dolphins: DT Ndamukong Suh

After a few great years with the Detroit Lions, Suh broke the bank with the Dolphins, signing a six-year deal worth $114 million with $60 million of it guaranteed.

Suh generated some controversy with dirty plays and backed it up with good but not great production. Miami moved on after just three years to save some money against the cap.

New England Patriots: LB Adalius Thomas

The Patriots looked like they had scored a coup when they signed Thomas away from the Ravens in 2007. Thomas, a two-time Pro Bowler, was expected to thrive with the Patriots and help key a new wave of the New England dynasty.

Things didn’t go according to plan as Thomas dealt with various injuries and never really fit in with the Patriot way before getting cut after three seasons.

New York Jets: CB Trumaine Johnson

Neil O’Donnell merited consideration here but Johnson was simply a disaster for the Jets. Ex-GM Mike Maccagnan gave Johnson $72 million in 2018 to be a shutdown corner only to watch his effort level disappear once he got paid.

Johnson was benched on multiple occasions and the Jets cut him in June, eating $12 million of dead money to get Johnson off the roster.
