C. Kansas City Royals. 2. player. 7. Scouting Report. Salvador Perez. Pick Analysis

Perez has a few major negatives right off of the bat. Not only is he an aging catcher that only hit .235 in his most recent full season, but he missed all of 2019 due to injury. The COVID-19 diagnosis that could hamper the start of his 2020 season doesn’t help matters either.

This, however, is the extremely pessimistic way of viewing Perez’s stock. The optimistic way to look at him is seeing Perez as a guy who made six consecutive All-Star teams and has five Gold Gloves to his name. He is clearly an upgrade over incumbent catcher Wilson Ramos, and the Mets won’t need to give up someone like Andres Gimenez or Ronny Mauricio to get him.

Perez might be getting a little long in the tooth, and his already poor athletic ability just got even worse due to his injury, but few catchers have his combination of power and defensive prowess, and the Mets could be able to pry him away from an inept Royals team that likely isn’t going to do much in 2020. With Perez signed until the end of 2021, the Mets could be able to acquire a veteran catcher that helps them contend next year in addition to the truncated 2020 season.
