Terrebonne High School (Houma, LA). 3. player. Scouting Report. DT. Maason Smith. 817. Pick Analysis

There are three five-star recruits LSU has a good to strong chance of getting. The first guy we’ll touch on of that group is defensive tackle Maason Smith from Houma, Louisiana. Not only is Smith the No. 1 player from Louisiana in this cycle, but he’s the No. 2 defensive tackle prospect in the nation, as well as the No. 20 overall player in his class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

At 6-foot-5 and 316 pounds, Smith has 30 official offers. He is looking at four SEC blue-bloods for his commitment: LSU, the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs. Though the Bayou Bengals have to be the presumptive favorite because they are the reigning national champions and are in-state, what are the chances he plays for one of the other three?

Smith’s primary recruiter to LSU is defensive line coach Bill Johnson with special teams coordinator Greg McMahon serving as his secondary. If Smith were to sign with LSU, it would be Johnson and McMahon’s first-ever five-star commit. The three other programs vying for Smith’s commitment have landed at least one-five star with their primary recruiters.

Though LSU is the frontrunner for his commitment, it wouldn’t be shocking to see a program like Georgia come in and take the No. 1 player from Louisiana back to Athens. The Dawgs feels like No. 2 here, but we can’t rule them out just yet, just like we can’t rule out Alabama or Florida entirely. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see where Smith ends up with his impactful commitment.
