Rookie Cole Custer just won his first Cup Series at Kentucky.

You can hear the excitement from the commentary team at the Kentucky Speedway on Sunday when rookie, Cole Custer, secured his first Cup Series win in pretty dominant fashion. If the crowd had been there it would have been even wilder.

This easily puts Custer as a Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender, if not the automatic winner by default.

This is Custer’s first year driving but already showed immense progress driving the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 41 Ford. Custer led the race in five of the 267 laps in the Quaker State 400 and won at the 1.5-mile Kentucky track in Xfinity Series competition last year.

Fun facts bout Sunday’s Cup Series in Kentucky

  • Martin Truex Jr. came in second, .271 seconds behind Custer
  • Matt DiBenedetto came in third place with Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch coming in fourth and fifth place.
  • Aric Almirola led the most laps (a career-high of 128) but placed eighth-place overall

It’s been a rough time for NASCAR as of late after they caught controversy for banning the Confederate flag from its races and then with the news of a noose found in Bubba Wallace’s garage. Wallace is the only Black NASCAR driver.
