The St. Louis sluggers records his first home run for the Cardinals in 2020
MLB Opening Day was stressful for the St. Louis Cardinals. On paper, they should’ve had an easy time against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. Yet, they had to overcome a Pirates comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the 5-4 win.
On Saturday, the Cardinals put themselves up on the scoreboard early. In the bottom of the first inning, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run off Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams, and sent it into Big Mac Land!
The irony of sending a baseball into the “Golden Arches” section in the home of the Gateway Arch!
The Goldy Arches
Goldschmidt has been on fire ever since the 2020 MLB season kicked off this week. In St. Louis’ very first game of the campaign, Goldschmidt recorded two hits and was walked once during three at bats on Friday. Now, he follows it up with his very first home run in the barren stands of Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals made the big splash decision in 2019 to acquire Goldschmidt in a blockbuster trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the first half of last season, “Goldy” struggled mightily. But once the second half kicked off, Goldschmidt was St.Louis’ hottest hitter, helping lead the team to an NL Central title.
There are no signs of struggle for Goldschmidt thus far. While he won’t top his 34 home run and 97 RBI total from last season due to the 60-game schedule, you can expect Goldschmidt to have a vastly better slash line.
So far, so good.
