Jalen Hurts is putting all of his energy into improving his game.

Rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts ended up in a somewhat uncomfortable situation when the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. After the franchise spent 2019 assuring fans that Carson Wentz was their long-term quarterback, taking a talented rookie in an early-round was a big surprise, but the questions and expectations don’t seem to be bothering Hurts at all.

In an interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia, Hurts made it clear that he isn’t trying to dethrone Wentz or challenge his leadership on the team. He told NBC, “I’m just worried about improving. I’ve said it three times and I don’t want to come off or come across any way, I’m just trying to improve every day. I’m trying to be the best quarterback I can be every day for this team.”

Hurts has the perfect attitude as teams begin reporting to training camp. Prioritizing competition or stressing about a starting spot is not a good recipe for success or strong team chemistry. Hurts is focused on what he can control: himself. That shows a lot of maturity and bodes well for his future in the NFL.

According to Bleeding Green Nation’s Brandon Lee Gowton, Hurts is putting in the work in his training so far. With such an unusual off-season, the grind during training camp is going to be a completely different animal in order to get athletes where they need to be, and Hurts clearly isn’t shying away from that. He’s not spending his time worrying about being a “gadget player” or anything else. All he wants to do is become the best football player he can be.

Wentz, despite being the franchise guy, doesn’t have a great history with his health. He’s been injured at critical moments for the past three seasons, and last season, the Birds didn’t have a backup quarterback that could really keep them competitive. Even if Hurts rides the bench this season, he’ll be in the perfect place to fill in for Wentz if he can’t stay healthy.
