Cristiano Ronaldo was content to stay at Juventus under the management of Maurizio Sarri, but the installment of Andrea Pirlo may push him to move to PSG.

Juventus’ inability to conquer Lyon in the Champions League may cost the club more than the services of manager Maurizio Sarri. There’s also a very strong possibility that Cristiano Ronaldo may use the club’s European failure as a reason to leave the Serie A giants behind.

According to footmercato.net, super-agent Jorge Mendes will be actively discussing the star attacker’s future with PSG officials when the club competes in Turin in the final eight of their own Champions League competition. It’s unclear just how supportive Ronaldo is of the conversations, but Mendes clearly has a lot of financial incentive to push for a lucrative transfer this summer.

No matter which person is behind the talks, it’s a clear sign of concern for Juventus officials. The perception around Europe is that the club chose Pirlo to take over for Sarri, in part, out of an effort to keep their expenses down in the midst of the current global pandemic. Other big-name candidates, such as former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, had strong interest in the Juventus job but were looking for a much more substantial wage packet.

Ronaldo is not the sort of player who is ever going to be pleased with his club taking the cheap way out. His advanced age makes Juventus’ most recent managerial decision even more concerning for the global superstar. Ronaldo is approaching the end of his career. He cannot afford to wait around for a manager like Pirlo to learn on the job for a season or two.

The big question that remains unanswered is whether or not PSG have the financial might to make Juventus a suitable offer this summer. The French giants are one of Europe’s richest clubs, but even they might struggle to sanction a transfer offer large enough to acquire a player of Ronaldo’s stature this summer.

At the moment, the odds still strongly favor Ronaldo staying put at Juventus for the foreseeable future. The news that Mendes is actively shopping him to a club like PSG does bring the possibility of him making a sensational move to France, so it’s a big story to watch over the coming days.
