Carolina Panthers – Jeremy Chinn vs. Justin Burris

The Panthers spent a second-round pick on the uber-athletic Jeremy Chinn, seen by some observers as a poor man’s Isaiah Simmons. In another year he perhaps would be a lock to start at strong safety. However, following a unique offseason and with no preseason games, the Panthers could well hand the job to the more experienced option in free-agent addition Burris.

Chicago Bears – Mitchell Trubisky vs. Nick Foles

It’s the last chance saloon for Mitchell Trubisky’s career in Chicago. Will the lack of a normal offseason lead the Bears to stick with him as starter given his experience in Matt Nagy’s offense, or will they put their faith in Nick Foles to adapt quickly and consign the former second overall pick to the bench?

Cincinnati Bengals – Vonn Bell vs. Shawn Williams

Shawn Williams led the Bengals with 114 tackles from the strong safety position last season but has a significant fight on his hands to retain that role. Cincinnati gave Bell a three-year contract worth $18million. That is starter-level money and it would be a significant surprise if the former New Orleans Saint is not lining up alongside free safety Jessie Bates.

Cleveland Browns – Wyatt Teller vs. Drew Forbes

The Browns made big-time moves to shore up the tackle spots by signing Jack Conklin and drafting Jedrick Wills but there remains a concern on the interior after Teller endured a difficult 2019 at right guard. Forbes, a 2019 sixth-round pick whose rookie year was hindered by a knee injury, is the man looking to unseat him.

It’s not a battle to get the pulse racing but it’s the most important one for a Browns team whose postseason hopes are tied to their ability to better protect Baker Mayfield.
