David Benavidez hammers Roamer Alexis Angulo for TKO in 10
David Benavidez lost his WBC super middleweight title on the scale, but he badly battered Roamer Alexis Angulo before forcing Angulo’s corner to stop it.
David Benavidez disappointed himself and many others when he lost his title on the scale, but he partially made up for it by stopping Roamer Alexis Angulo.
It would be easy to believe that Benavidez slacked off during training, and that’s why he missed weight ahead of his Showtime bout on Saturday, Aug. 15. His performance told a different story.
There wasn’t a single point in their contest where Benavidez wasn’t in control. Angulo (26-2, 22 KOs) has fought some great boxers, including Gilberto Ramirez and Anthony Sims Jr. He had never been stopped and proved his toughness. Angulo absorbed a hellacious amount of punishment from Benavidez.
In round 1, Benavidez went to work with his jab. He looked relaxed and stayed on the outside, but eventually pressed forward with combinations. It was an active opening round dominated by the former WBC champion.
Benavidez (23-0, 20 KOs) imposed his will for the entirety of the contest. He let his hands go more in round 2 and poured it on more round after round. They became carbon copies of each other as Benavidez landed uppercuts, hooks, body shots, you name it.
Angulo tried to rush Benavidez at times and scored too, but his attacks were shortlived. He trapped Benavidez on the ropes on several occasions but smothered his punches. Angulo wasted those opportunities.
David Benavidez lost his title on the scale, but he brutalized Roamer Alexis Angulo and showed he has extraordinary skills.
By round 10, Angulo was running on fumes. He tried not to show any anguish on his face, but his lack of activity and inability to escape Benavidez’s assault spelled doomed. The action was incredibly onesided. After the bell, Angulo’s corner stopped the fight, saving their fighter’s health in the process.
According to ShowStats, Benavidez threw 703 punches and landed 290. In comparison, Angulo only threw 400. It was a stellar performance by Benavidez. He told FanSided during the after-fight press conference that it was the best performance of his career.
Ironically, during the post-fight interview, Benavidez rated his display an 8, showing he believes he has more to offer.
“I felt good,” said Benavidez. “I rate myself a solid eight. I could of did some stuff better, but overall it was a great performance.”
Benavidez added, “I like to do the stuff that nobody has ever done. Nobody has ever stopped him [Angulo], and I’m pretty sure nobody is ever going to make him look like that again.”
Benavidez no longer holds a title, but he’s undefeated and an amazing boxer. He wants to stay at super middleweight, but he’s big for the division. Time will tell if Benavidez can still make the limit.
