The longtime New England Patriot seems to have taken a liking to his new quarterback

The New England Patriots usually run their annual training camps with minimal fanfare or hype, but this year is different. That’s all due to the presence of new quarterback Cam Newton.

Tom Brady is no longer on the team, as he signed a massive contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, Newton is adjusting to his new team, as he looks to be Brady’s successor.

As is the case whenever you attend camp, you’re bound to make a new friend. That was the case in New England, as Newton posted a photo of his new best friend in Patriots training camp: wide receiver Julian Edelman.

Edelman working with his new quarterback

Edelman hasn’t worked with a new quarterback since the 2016 season, where Jimmy Garoppolo stepped in to replace Brady, who was serving a four-game suspension for his role in Deflategate. But it’s unknown if Newton will be the guy targeting Edelman downfield.

In padded practices, Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer are received reps with the first-team. Belichick only fueled the constant speculation by hinting at the team potentially platooning all three signal callers to open up the season if it’ll help the team win games.

This past calendar year, the former NFL MVP underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder and his left foot, with the latter limiting him to just two games last season. The Carolina Panthers ultimately released him back in February, as new head coach Matt Rhule opted to sign Teddy Bridgewater to be his starting quarterback.

Quarterback-needy teams like the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Chargers were skeptical about Newton’s health. All it took was one team, and that was the Patriots, who is giving him the opportunity to prove everyone wrong.

But he can only do so if he shows out in camp. If he does, the Newton-Edelman connection will be downright dangerous for defenses this season.
