Chelsea continue to plow forward with expensive transfer purchases this summer. The latest plot could bode poorly for Christian Pulisic.

Perhaps someone should let officials at Chelsea know that a global pandemic is suppressing transfer prices all across the continent. Nothing about the Blues’ actions this summer seem to acknowledge that sort of financial reality.

The latest big-name star to be linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is Federico Bernardeschi. According to Calcio Mercato, The Old Lady are anxious to sell the talented winger for a transfer fee of £40 million. The report links both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid with strong interest in the Italian international.

How would Federico Bernardeschi change Chelsea’s lineup?

Chelsea’s interest seems curious to say the least. They already have a young winger tipped for greatness in the form of USMNT star Christian Pulisic. The young American will miss the start of the 2020-21 Premier League campaign due to injury, but it still seems curious that Frank Lampard might want to add a player who would compete with him directly next season.

No one can question Pulisic’s talent, but there are reasonable doubts about his ability to stay fit for an entire campaign. He’s been in and out of the lineup for Chelsea since making the move to England. It’s possible that Lampard and the higher-ups at the club are simply eyeing Bernardeschi as an insurance policy to cover the side in case of future injuries to Pulisic.

It’s also possible that Lampard simply views Bernardeschi as a quality replacement for Willian. The Brazilian’s departure does leave playing time open on the wing at Stamford Bridge. Bernaderschi is a very different player for Willian, but they do, at the very least, occupy the same space on the pitch when the ball is kicked off.

It’s clear that Chelsea are doing everything within their power to strengthen their attacking options for a move up the Premier League table next season. Several young players are going to lose their chances to seize stardom at the club given all the high-priced transfers coming in. Signing Bernardeschi might put Pulisic’s spot at the club in slight jeopardy.
