Takuma Sato won the Indy 500 on a yellow flag after Spencer Pigot’s dangerous crash.

Takuma Sato, who became the first Asian driver to win the Indy 500 back in 2017, was again crowned as the winner of the Indy 500 on Sunday.

The big win came after a dangerous crash for Spencer Pigot, which was curiously not red-flagged. The accident probably should have been given a red flag resulting in a shoot out for the remainder of the race, but it was yellow-flagged instead.

The crash itself was brutal, with Pinot spinning out on Turn 4, driving backwards for a spell before veering and crashing into the safety tires guarding the entrance to the pit lane:

Details on Pigot’s status are still coming in, but he appeared to be lying on the ground afterward, being examined by the medical team. He was able to exit the car before being helped onto a stretcher.

Hopefully he was just catching his breath after such a scary incident, but he will likely be examined for a concussion.

The caution flag came out with five laps remaining, ending the thrilling race under caution.
