The Los Angeles Chargers’ young receiver not expected to miss regular season games

This season, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos are dominating the headlines inside the AFC West. The team that’s been slept on throughout this offseason are the Los Angeles Chargers, whom have one of the more complete rosters in the league.

However, their offense took a hit on Sunday after wide receiver Mike Williams suffered a shoulder injury. Now, there’s clarification on how serious the ailment is.

According to ESPN, Williams has been diagnosed with a sprained AC joint and is considered week-to-week. It’s not all doom and gloom though, as NFL insider Adam Schefter says Williams doesn’t need surgery and is expected to be ready for the team’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 13.

In fact, a source told Schefter that they’d be “shocked” if Williams didn’t suit up for Week 1.

Chargers will have to take a cautious approach with Williams

Williams picked up the injury while attempting to make a diving catch, where he landed hard on his shoulder. While Williams is a tremendous receiver, he’s had some run-ins with injuries.

The Chargers selected Williams with the seventh pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, but his rookie season was curtailed by a herniated disc in his back during training camp and a knee injury in the second-half of that campaign. But, he’s been ailment-free for the past two seasons, apart from back spasms that caused him to miss one game last year.

Williams truly shined in 2019, as he hauled in 49-of-90 targets from now-former Chargers signal caller Phillip Rivers for 1,004 yards and two touchdowns. Despite the low number of scores, Williams led the NFL in yards-per-reception (20.4).

While the Chargers seem confident that the fourth-year receiver will be good to go for the season opener, they need to be ready in case he’s not deemed fit to play. If Williams is sidelined, expect to see Jalen Guyton, Joe Reed or KJ Hill to receive an uptick in offensive snaps at the start of the upcoming campaign.
