Tyrod Taylor, Los Angeles Chargers

It is difficult to remember a time when a franchise has gone from the cusp of the top seed in their conference to a top-six draft pick in the NFL Draft. Yet here we are.

With the No. 6 overall pick, in came Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert to replace Philip Rivers.

Despite Herbert’s presence, the team has been steadfast in saying that veteran Tyrod Taylor will be the Week 1 starter in Los Angeles. And we have no reason to believe this won’t be the case.

Yet in nine NFL seasons, Taylor has never started all 16 games, and has only three time started the majority of games for his franchise (the Buffalo Bills, from 2015-17). In fact, the situation facing Taylor and the Chargers is quite similar to the situation facing Taylor and the Cleveland Browns in 2018: Taylor is name the starter with a top first-round pick, rookie signal-caller on the bench behind him.

Could history repeat itself for Taylor? We’d wager it is a near certainty, and Taylor will be benched during the course of the 2020 season.
