4. The Buccaneers’ defense is underrated

Any football fan is familiar with the mantra that defense wins championships. That would seem to be a detriment to casual football fans who think of Brady and the Buccaneers’ stellar offensive weapons.

The good news for Tampa Bay is that its defense is loaded with talent that isn’t as well-known nationally because the team as a whole hasn’t been very good. Most fans are now aware of Shaq Barrett, who led the NFL with 19.5 sacks last season and emerged as a pass-rushing force for the Buccaneers.

Another unheralded star is linebacker Lavonte David, who has been a tackling machine since entering the league in 2012. The Buccaneers found another great linebacker in last year’s draft with Devin White, who racked up 91 tackles and recovered seven fumbles as a rookie.

There are also some big names like Ndamukong Suh and Jason Pierre-Paul to help create pressure up front, which should ease the burden on a younger Buccaneers’ secondary. Don’t be shocked if the Buccaneers put together a top-10 defense in 2020.
