Frank Gore continues to mock Father Time.

The New York Jets‘ running game last season was virtually non-existent, but that’s mostly due to their turnstile of an offensive line unit. General manager Joe Douglas did running back Le’Veon Bell a massive favor by bringing in an entirely new offensive line, and some help in the backfield.

That help was 16-year veteran Frank Gore, who’s simply the best backup running back in the NFL right now.

Following practice on Wednesday, Jets head coach Adam Gase said that the 37-year-old back looks the same as he did back in 2008., That’s right, Gore still has access to the fountain of youth, and he’s holding out on us.

Gore is infinite

Gase and Gore have a longstanding relationship, when the now-head coach was an offensive assistant on Mike Singletary’s San Francisco 49ers. Working with Gore was a joy, because he was a threat on the ground and through the air. That year, Gore rushed for 1,036 yards and six touchdowns on 240 carries, while catching 43 passes for 373 yards and two scores.

The duo reunited 10 years later, when Gase was the sideline boss for the Miami Dolphins. Even though his rushing yard total was down from his prime years and he tallied zero touchdowns, Gore was still averaging 4.6 yards per carry as the number two running back on the depth chart.

Coming off 599 rushing yards and two touchdowns with the Buffalo Bills in ’19, Gore now creates a potentially dangerous one-two punch with Bell. That alone will work wonders for Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, who won’t have to figuratively put the offense on his back like he did last season.

The loaded running back depth chart will be relied on heavily, especially with New York’s myriad of injuries in the wide receiver room. It helps that Gore and Bell will have a mountain of a man in Mekhi Becton to run behind this season.
