5 breakout fantasy football stars to pick up for Week 1
3. Blake Jarwin, TE, Dallas Cowboys
Roster%: ESPN 20.2%
Jason Witten was the longtime tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, but you already knew that. His successor was slated to be Blake Jarwin. However, that was delayed when Witten decided to run it back with the team in 2019 after a one-year brief retirement in 2018.
Witten has since left and signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, leaving the tight end job for Jarwin once again. Surprisingly, his roster percentage is much lower than expected at just under 20%.
Jarwin has shown he has the tools to be a dynamic tight end. In a limited role in both 2018 and 2019, he averaged around 29 catches for 336 yards and three scores.
The Cowboys have a handful of playmakers on offense, which is why Jarwin gets overshadowed. CeeDee Lamb, Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper, and Michael Gallup will all see reps before Jarwin.
However, the redzone is where Jarwin’s value comes in. Especially Week 1 on the road against the Los Angeles Rams. How many times have we seen the Cowboys use Witten, or other tight ends, to roll out and haul in touchdowns down in the redzone?
With Dak Prescott and Elliott establishing play action, Jarwin could slip a block and find himself wide open for some scoring opportunities in this one. He is not the volume guy Witten was, but he does offer a downfield dynamic that could balloon his stats and bring a solid fantasy return. With some decent yardage and touchdown potential, streamlining Jarwin for this week is a favorable play.
