By default, someone will end up becoming the number-one wide receiver for the New York Jets. On paper, the group does not jump out, though that can change as the season begins.

Currently, rookie Denzel Mims is dealing with an injured hamstring, which is not a friendly sight. Jamison Crowder had a strong season for the Jets in 2019 and he appears to be the team’s biggest threat at the position after a big Week 1.

Although, people should not overlook free agent signing Breshad Perriman. This offseason he signed a one-year deal after finishing last season on an eye-popping hot streak with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In the final three games of the year, he went for 349 yards on just 17 receptions with four touchdowns. He did so on only 26 targets. Going two games farther back, his receiving yard total was 506 in the final five games. He had a final tally of 645.

Granted, Perriman was playing in a vertical offense with two other star receivers and often played from behind. But the Bucs won three of those five games, meaning he was not picking up stats in garbage time.

Like Mims, Perriman is dealing with a lower-body injury as well. In Week 1, he was lightly used in an inconsistent loss for the Jets with three catches for just 17 yards.

In the correct system, Perriman can project as a solid fantasy receiver. He can potentially take that number-one role for the Jets, and he currently provides the team with their lone outside threat at receiver. If he got targets last year in that offense with the Bucs, he will do so this year with the Jets.

Week 2 the Jets have a tough matchup against a stellar defense with the San Francisco 49ers. Do not shy away. Perriman can provide big yardage and a potential touchdown, even against such a strong opponent.
