Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Backup Running Backs

The Vikings didn’t have a lot of chances to run the ball as they were down a lot. Dalvin Cook had 12 carries while Alexander Mattison had five. Mattison also had two catches for 16 yards. There aren’t that many passing options for Minnesota so Mattison might see more time on the field on passing downs. Plus, if Cook goes down with an injury, Mattison vaults to RB1. He’s available in 40 percent of leagues.

After Adrian Peterson signed with the Detroit Lions, many thought he would be buried on the depth chart. He was anything but buried. Bo Scarbrough landed in the IR, leaving Peterson, Kerryon Johnson and rookie D’Andre Swift as the running backs.

Peterson finished the game as the top-scoring fantasy back among the three. He had 14 carries for 93 yards and another three catches for 21 yards. The other two combined for 10 carries and 22  yards. Peterson is rostered in just 21 percent of leagues. He needs to be rostered more.

Nyheim Hines was active in both the running and passing game for the Colts. He finished with seven carries, 28 yards, eight receptions, 45 yards and two total touchdowns. Rookie back Jonathan Taylor finished with just under 15 fantasy points. Marlon Mack left the game early and may be out with a torn Achilles tendon. Hines will see more carries with Taylor also in the mix.

While everyone was looking at Chris Thompson, it was James Robinson who led the Jaguars in rush attempts. Thompson didn’t have a carry and just two receptions for 26 yards. Robinson had 16 carries for 62 yards and a 28-yard catch. It might have been game flow, but Robinson looked like the back to own in week 1. I’d add and stash him for week 2 to see how things play out against the Titans. He’s rostered in just under 30 percent of leagues.

Frank Gore does not die. Le’Veon Bell the game early with a hamstring injury, relieving running back duties to Gore. The veteran had six carries for 24 yards. The Jets were down for most of the game and had to abandon the run. If Bell. is out for week 2, Gore will at least share some of the workload with Josh Adams. Gore is rostered in just 2.6 percent of leagues.
