Upset Alert: 3 college football teams in danger of losing in Week 3
College football upset alert No. 3: Appalachian State Mountaineers
Rank: 23 | Opponent: Marshall Thundering Herd | Time: Saturday, Sept. 19, 3:30 p.m. ET
For anyone thinking that the Appalachian State Mountaineers were going to take a step back from winning the Sun Belt last season with the departure of head coach Eli Drinkwitz, they gave an emphatic boost for the confidence in their season-opener last week. Not only did quarterback Zac Thomas continue to look like a stud but the rushing attack racked up 308 yards in a 35-20 win over Charlotte.
Shawn Clark’s team clearly has some offensive firepower on their hands and plenty of versatility. They look to once again compete atop the Sun Belt and, with the removal of Big Ten and Pac-12 teams from the latest AP Top 25, they made their way into the rankings. But could they lose that designation just one week later?
If the Marshall Thundering Herd have anything to say about it, they might. Entering the season, there were questions about the team as they looked to bring in new blood at quarterback. Grant Wells stepped in and helped Marshall look exceptionally dominant in their season-opening 59-0 win, albeit over Eastern Kentucky.
There is definitely a chance that, against a viable FBS team, Marshall and Wells might struggle a great deal. Having said that, they showed some offensive upside and Appalachian’s State defense was far from perfect. If the Mountaineers come out flat and Wells steps up in his first big moment, the Herd could indeed push for an upset on Saturday.
