Joe Buck was not expecting to join the Pro Football Hall of Fame Thursday.

Joe Buck had no idea he had been elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on live television.

When David Baker comes knocking, you answer the door. Though Buck couldn’t see the 6-foot-9, 400-pound friendly giant in person, the effect was the same. Baker surprised Buck with his election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the 2020 recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. This has been a long-time coming for the lead play-by-play guy for FOX.

Joe Buck joins his late father Jack Buck in Canton, Ohio with this honor.

As the son of one of the greatest play-by-play guys in the history of sports, Buck had massive expectations placed on him as a 20-something starting out with FOX’s NFL coverage in the mid-1990s. When you think of St. Louis Cardinals baseball, you think of his late father Jack Buck. With his election, Joe Buck joins his father as the only father-son recipients of this esteemed honor.

Buck’s broadcast partner for the last 19 years has been Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who spent his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys, winning three Super Bowls in four years as the signal-caller of The Triplets. They’ve called so many unforgettable games over the years, including the famous David Tyree Helmet Catch in Super Bowl 42. It was “CAUGHT!”

Buck not only is the lead play-by-play for FOX’s NFL coverage, but he does the same thing in the MLB with National Baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz providing the color commentary. Being able to call one sport at a high level is incredibly difficult, but to be at the top of your industry in two for as long as Buck has, you must be among the very best at your craft of your generation.

Buck might get dumped on by many folks on Twitter, but he’s a Hall of Famer and the eggs are not.
