Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert both out for second half vs Jets
By Mike Luciano
Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert are both out for the rest of the Jets game.
The San Francisco 49ers have been hit harder by injuries than any other team in the league after Week 1. Rather than some welcome respite against the New York Jets, defensive standouts Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas were joined on the injury list by starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and running back Raheem Mostert.
Garoppolo’s ankle injury and Mostert’s knee will both exclude them from participating in the second half of their game against the Jets.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert were both playing great
Garoppolo was limping for a majority of this game, but he was still able to carve the Jets up, completing 14 of his 16 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to fill-in tight end Jordan Reed. Nick Mullens, who has shown he can be a more than a serviceable backup in the NFL, came in to replace him.
Mostert touched the ball just 10 times from scrimmage, but he was able to top 100 yards from scrimmage, 80 of which came when he broke a touchdown run on the first play of the game. The 49ers will likely use a combination of Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon to replace Mostert for the remainder of this game. While these two are solid, they lack Mostert’s elite speed and big-play potential, which could come back to bite them.
The 49ers came into this game without their tight end, top wide receiver, and No. 2 pass rusher, and they will leave the afternoon without their best defensive player, starting quarterback, and starting running back. Even if the 49ers hold on for the win, their roster in Week 3 is going to look much different if these injured stars are unable to return to full health.
