3. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers entered the season with legitimate hopes of reaching a second consecutive Super Bowl. Their 1-1 start certainly doesn’t dash those hopes entirely, but it does put them in last place in the NFC West heading into Week 3.

Of course, the rash of injuries San Francisco endured in Week 2 is the real story here. Nick Bosa is almost certainly gone for the year. The same might be true for Solomon Thomas. Losing both defensive linemen will significantly weaken what was the team’s biggest strength in 2020.

The offense got dinged heavily with injuries too. Jimmy Garoppolo has a high ankle sprain that could limit him moving forward. The 49ers can’t afford for the issue to linger. Resting him now is the best way for them to make sure he’s 100% healthy down the stretch. Keeping the offense afloat in the short term will only be complicated by losing Rasheem Mostert for several weeks.

Kyle Shanahan has the coaching acumen to keep San Francisco competitive, but their Super Bowl dreams might be over without Bosa dominating at the line of scrimmage. The fact that the 49ers are flying Ziggy Ansah in to sign a deal this week shows just how concerned they are.
